This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of
West Africa.
Special Features: The best known masks
of the Yaure, a small
ethnic group inhabiting the central region of Ivory Coast, represent human faces
supplemented by animal attributes. They belong either to the Je or Lo, types
of masks that, for outsiders, are difficult to distinguish from one another.
With the aid of such masks, the people hope to influence supernatural powers,
or yu, that can do harm to humans but that can also ensure their welfare.
This mask has been identified as a tu bodu (buffalo), a Je mask figure, although
the finely fluted, downward curving horns suggest an imaginary beast more than
a realistic representation. The buffalo is regarded as a symbol of a strong
and brave man. The horns frame a coiffure arranged in three semicircular locks,
the Yaure associate these with power and prosperity. The finely modeled face
is contoured by a zigzag band that underscores the harmonious appearance of
the mask and is typical of Yaure pieces. The peacock, with its tail spread wide,
is perched on its two legs surmounting the human head. By fanning out its wings
the peacock serves as a symbol of a proud and beautiful spirit.
Hanging Instructions: Two holes are precarved
into the top portion of the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes
for immediate hanging.
Care: Dust the
piece as needed.
