This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of West Africa.

Special Features: This female mask is a fine example of the masks of the Baule people which are distinguished from those of the neighbouring tribes by the refinement of the work itself and the gorgeous 3-dimensional representation of the hair, the hairstyle done in 4 parts and facial tattoos done in parts of threes.

This mask is of the kind referred to as Gba masks which were used at the funerals of women during the harvest season and it celebrates beauty and age.

The facial marks are meant for beautification [patterned scarification was considered the highest form of beauty in the old African civilizations] and the hair is done in a way so that it crowns the head. Also attached to it are balls representing beads which are used to highlight the hair and thus the beauty portrayed.

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are precarved into the top portion of the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.

Care: Dust the piece as needed.
