SOLD West African Bete Tribal Face Mask 24"

This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of West Africa.
The
Bete are an agriculturalist group who live in
southwestern Ivory Coast, between the Bandama and Sassandra rivers. Only the
western Bete are known to have a masking tradition.
The face of this mask is composed of geometric volumes that, as independent
bodies, seem to emerge from a flat back panel. The separate features are
arranged in horizontal tiers, interrupted in the vertical only by the hooked
nose and a low crest with a zig zag pattern extending from the lower edge of the
protruding forehead over the crown of the head. Between the four eyes are two
small rectangular openings have been cut to permit the wearer to see, at least
partially.
The earliest function of this mask was to prepare men for war. By wearing it to
battle, the exaggerated features are meant to frighten potential enemies. Later,
the mask presided over peace-treaty ceremonies and dispute-resolution meetings.

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are pre carved into the top portion of the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.
