This wood mask is an authentic one of a kind mask, hand carved and purchased in West Africa.
Elephants are the world's
most commanding land creatures, unsurpassed in grandeur and power. Thus elephant
masks, while rare in Africa, are fully appropriate symbols of important leaders
or, at least, their respected deputies or messengers. Therefore, the elephant
mask is a representation of political authority and are bestowed on royalty or
the elderly in the tribe.
This elephant mask depicts salient features of the elephant's long trunk, large
ears, and large tusks. There are beautiful detailed carvings down the center of
the elephant's forehead, on the ears, and around the eyes. This is a cap crest
or a forehead mask which the mask wearer would put on his or her forehead.

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are pre carved into the top portion of the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.
