This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of West Africa.

Antelope mask with long horns and open mouth. This is a cap crest or a forehead mask which the mask wearer would on his or her forehead.

The antelope mask is used in initiation ceremonies and harvest rituals since it is believed to represent the spirit of the harvest. Animals are believed to be a gateway to interaction with the spirits since they inhabit the same forest where spirits are believed to dwell.

Also this mask is worn when chasing the spirits of the deceased away from the village into the forest. Since the antelope is a quick animal and horned, it is believed capable of this feat even though it is rarely predatory which has only endeared it to the community making it represent their guardian spirit.
