This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand
carved by the artists of West Africa.
This is a mask for a person of immense power and authority
and most likely a royalty. The superstructure of elephant denotes wisdom,
political power and ruler of a domain.
The protrusion of the head, the manner of tribal marks and the box shape of the
mouth suggest this is a
Baule mask and it was commissioned to be worn by the tribal chief or born by
his emissaries to intimate and exert his power wherever the mask may be
displayed.
