This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of West Africa.
This mask, a Glen Mu mask of the
Dan tribe, with its oval face, narrow eye
silts, and full lips reflects the Dan's idea of female beauty. Female masks with
narrow eye slits can appear as the dance mask tankagle for the audience's
amusement. The Dan possess numerous masks that embody bush spirits and either
fulfill social tasks or appear for the entertainment. Dan masks like this are
never a representation of a particular member of the community, rather they
represent the ideals of the society which in this mask, is the ideal of beauty.
The metal studs are used to enhance the aesthetics of the mask. This mask is
used in dance celebrations where the wearer is believed to fuse with the spirit
of the mask and channel messages in trance from the realms of the spirit world.
Masks such as this are passed down in different families and often members of
the family would make miniature versions of the family mask to carry around with
them as "passport masks"

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are pre carved into the top portion of the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.
