This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of West Africa.

The Dan tribe Jackal Mask wears a headdress of cowrie shells which symbolizes wealth (cowries were once currencies in ancient African civilizations). The face of the masks bears the unmistakable long snout of a jackal implying the animal's good qualities. Jackals are believed to be sharp, shrewd, quick and cunning. Together with the goatee [a sign of male maturation] and the raised forehead, this is a male mask, intended to denote power, wealth, wit and fearlessness.

In tribal mythology, the jackal was bestowed with the power of speech and was made the god of diviners. Therefore, this mask when used in dance festivals would confer on the wearer the ability to reveal the will of the Creator.
