SOLD African Guro Mask Representing Peace 20"

This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of West Africa.

This is a mask made by the Guro tribe. It is an example of a Zamble mask which is one of the three mask types of Yu (others include Zimli his brother, depicted as wild and rough; and Gu, his wife (or daughter sometimes, also beautiful). It is a helmet mask and worn on different occasions. Its custodians were the members of Je, the men's secret society.

This mask depicts a bushbuck. It's smooth and brown surface show that it was carved in the ancient community and not a modern day copy.

This Zamble mask was used in dance ceremonies. The wearer would dance elegantly and in a controlled manner which was contrasted with the uncontrolled and wild dance of the Zimli mask. This mask demonstrates the need for order in the society and it would be the first to appear in a celebration as a demonstration of peace and social balance.

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are pre carved into the top portion of the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.
