This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of West Africa.

This is a Ligbi mask. The Ligbi live very close to the Senufo in Ivory Coast and Ghana and both their masks are alike. However, this is a Ligbi mask characterized by the slit downward eyes. This mask is an example of a Yangaleye mask and bears close resemblance to the Kpelie mask of the Senufo.

This Yangaleye combines the horns of a buffalo and the hornbill. The buffalo horns are a show of power. The hornbill, on the other hand, is a popular animal in the Ligbi lore. It is regarded as one of the mythical, primeval animals that attend to the souls of the dead. It is also a symbol of fertility. The behavior and the family life of the hornbill is also a reason why it is common on their masks as they aspire to its ideals.

This mask was worn in dances during ceremonies of the Do society. Even though these celebratory dances are becoming rarer, the Yangaleye mask is still worn at the funeral of distinguished Moslem holy men and also at the end of Ramadan. The colorful performers dance with such masks as this in pairs and the celebration can go on for a full week.

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are pre carved into the top portion of the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.
