This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of West Africa.

This is a Bedu mask. A Bedu plank mask is characterized by the three holes in its face and an attached superstructure. The Bedu masks is native to a loose and intermingled group of Gur-speaking people. They are small in number and spread throughout other tribes such as Nafana, Degha, Kulango in Ivory Coast, Ghana and Burkina Faso. They are hunters or fishermen.

This mask, also known as the Dance moon mask is a variation of the typical Bedu mask. The Bedu group arose from an anti-witchcraft cult in 1930 but there is no association with this defunct cult. This mask is normally danced during the winter solstice harvest. It can, however, be worn and performed for protection. It represents a guarantee of prosperity, harmony, children and health and is also used to celebrate family values.

During the harvest festival of Zaurau, this mask would appear in a pair. Of the pair, this mask would represent the male.

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are pre carved into the top portion of the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.
