African Yohure Tribal Face Mask 14"

This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of West Africa.

This is a Yohure mask. The Yohure mask is stylistically close to the Baure's and the Guro's but this mask bears the signature touch of the Yohure art form: the elaborate coiffure with a wavy hair line, the zigzag patterns of the collar, the eyebrows joined together and stopping at both sides of the eyes and the scarification marks on the forehead.

These scarification marks are meant to denote beauty and so also is the elaborate coiffure. The serrated collar may hold the raffia worn with the mask. This finely carved mask still has a patina coat which is a reminder that it was originally carved for use in rites.

This mask is an emblem of the yu spirit and can be worn during the je or lo celebrations which are meant to restore the social order, chase away evil spirits and send off the dead spirits of important men. Women were forbidden to look upon this mask so that they don't go barren.

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are pre carved into the top portion of the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.
