African Baule Statue with Water Pot 50"

This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of West Africa.

This fine wooden sculpture is an example of Baule carving. The Baule people live in Ivory Coast and are noted for their sculptures which exclusively depict spiritual beings. Placing their sculptures on round bases is a feature of Baule carvings. Another distinguishing feature is the facial scarification marks which are meant to portray beauty and acceptance into adulthood through rites of passage. Also to be noted is the elaborate coiffure, a bit of which was sculpted in this figure and the care it took to carve the knots of the wrapper.

Baule sculptures often show figures touching their abdomen. The being represented in this carving has one hand under her wrapper and from the bulge was clearly sculpted touching her abdomen. This is the representation of the peaceful nature of the being.

This sculpture depicts a spirit used in ritual ceremonies of an ancestor cult. It represents the matrilineal lineage down which Baule clans descend. Also, the figure is carrying a water pot. This is a double symbol pointing to the female duty of watering and nurturing and also recognizing an important component of the Baule agrarian society.
