This wood statue is a one of a kind statue, hand carved by the artists of Indonesia.
This is a Leti ancestor statue from Southeast Moluccas of the Spice Islands in Indonesia. This is an intricately carved piece with even richer details than the average Leti statue. The distinguishing features of a Leti statue found on this figure include the oblong face, the arched eyebrows, straight nose and the exaggeratedly long legs bent in a seated position.
Often the strict interpretation of Leti statues such as this is difficult since there are scant documentations of the ancient culture and the lore of the Islands. However, it is known that the Leti people represent ancestors with their statues. Therefore, this two-piece statue (a rarity in itself) represents a line of descendants. By placing one figure over the other, a vertical relationship rather than a horizontal one is depicted. This figure, thus, depicts the head of a matrilineal ancestry.
It is typical for Leti figures to hold their ankles (as in the lower figure) or fold their hands over the knees. However, there are ones like the figure above where a tablet with a five-petal design is held across the knees. This and the elaborate headgear of the top figure establish the authority and superiority of that figure. In addition, since it is typical for Leti statues to represent the social status of the people depicted, it can be safely deduced that the upper figure represent a wealthy and powerful matriarch.
