This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This Chokwe mask is of a relatively new class. The Chokwe tribe found mostly in Angola, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, have different types of masks. Some were used for religious rites and some for entertainment; some were worn only by royalty and some by dancers. This is an entertainment mask worn in tribal dances to celebrate womanhood.

This mask of a young female is of the class Nwana pwo, which is a younger version of the Pwo mask, a counterpart of the Chihongo male mask. This mask is representative of young women who have been initiated into the adult female, Ukule society and are ready for marriage.

Facial scarifications represent beautification marks and tribal identification. The braided hair and the loop of earrings are features of female personal grooming which indicate the beauty of the represented woman. This is a mask for the celebration of beauty, fertility and womanhood.

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are pre carved into the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.
