This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This is a Pwo mask from the Chokwe tribe spread all over Angola, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Pwo masks such as this represent adult females. The elderly female so represented is a counterpart of the Chihongo mask which is a representation of the tribal chief. Therefore, this Pwo mask is of the chief's consort.

This mask's slit eyes, sharp teeth and oval faces are all distinctive style of Chokwe masks. The scarifications found on the mask are tribal beauty masks. The elaborate coiffure lends credence to high societal status of the figure represented by this mask.

This Pwo mask is a representation of an archetype of womanhood and connotes fertility, achievement and female beauty.

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are pre carved into the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.
