This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of the West Africa.

This is a polychrome Guro mask. The Guro people live in Ivory Coast and their art forms are closely related to their neighbor's, the Baule's. However, distinctive Guro craftsmanship found on this mask include the prominent collar, the S-shape profile made by the forehead and the bridge of the nose as well as the tattoo pattern cut into the forehead and the cheeks.

While the tattoos and the patterned coiffure are made to signify the beauty of the person so represented, the superstructure of bird on the mask, a common addition in Guro masks, is ornamental and has no specific symbolic representation. The broad collar is put there to hold the raffia cloak worn around the mask by dancers. This is a dance mask meant for tribal ceremonies.

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are pre carved into the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.
