This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of Democratic Republic of Congo.

This is a male Songye mask or kifewebe. The Songye tribe can be found in Democratic Republic of Congo. It has a lot of secret societies and is famed for its fetishist art. This mask bears the signature craftsmanship of the Songye people. Apart from the striation, it features the star-shaped lips and the heavy eye lids.

This is a male kifewebe mask that is believed by the Songye to represent spirits. Its magic is believed to correspond to the size of the crest on it. During tribal festivities, masks like this would have been worn by men who act as the chief's police to control the crowd. It is danced aggressively and its menace is supplemented by its raffia bast.

The white striation on the mask bears the positive connotation of purity and peace. However, it is a mask meant for intimidating enemies, warding off danger, conquering evil and healing the sick.

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are pre carved into the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.
