This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of West Africa.
An introspective face, a high forehead and large, downcast eyes, are some of the distinctive styles that place this mask as a Baule mask. This Baule mask is in the Mblo class. Mblo masks are one of the oldest forms of Baule masks; they are used for entertainment dances and are made to portray idealized states of beauty.
This refined Mblo mask is carved with care and must have been made to portray a known clan member. It has a lustrous surface to denote the clean, well-fed skin of a healthy and beautiful woman. Other markers of beauty found on this mask include the fine scarification marks and the extensive coiffure atop the head. Masks like this would have been worn in dancing skits or for solo performances.

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are pre carved into the top portion of the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.
