*This mask has slight damage to one of the birds beaks as well as a sturdy crack in the back of the mask. The crack will not spread and is stable.

This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of West Africa.

This is a Yaure mask. The Yaure people live in Ivory Coast and their art is very close to those of their neighbors, the Baule and the Guro. The stylistic elements of Yaure masks which overlap with their neighbors' include the elongated face, protruding mouth, semi-circular eyes and high forehead. These can be found on this mask. However, this mask possesses the subtle distinguishing marks of Yaure masks: accurate depiction of human head with a superstructure of animal figures and supplemented by animal features. The scarification marks meant for beautification are also fewer than on similar Baule masks.

However, the intricate coiffure adds to the beautification of the mask. The animal ears and the superstructure of the two birds have no special iconographic references but are made to add to the grandeur of the mask.

This Yaure mask represents the yu spirits which are considered dangerous. Therefore, the mask is handled among the Yaure people with caution. Women are discouraged from looking upon it for fear of becoming infertile. The two occasions when the mask is worn are the lo ceremony and the je celebration to restore the social equilibrium after important deaths.

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are pre carved into the top portion of the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.
