This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of Democratic Republic of Congo.

This is a Luba mask. The people of Luba live in Democratic Republic of Congo and their masks bear marked similarities to those of their neighbors, the Songye. In fact, both tribes refer to masks as kifewebe. Therefore, the accurate term for this mask is kifewebe. This kifewebe mask is believed to connect this world with the spirit world.

The Luba kifewebe mask differs from the Songye's by its shape. The round shape of this mask makes it definitely a Luba mask and by the dotted pattern on it, this mask is female. Additionally, the locks of hair on both sides of the face suggest that this is a female mask.

The origin of masks like this one is traced to the emergence of three spirits, a female and two males, near a lake. The female spirit, so depicted, chose to live amongst humans while the male spirits kept to the forest.

A mask like this would have been danced in a pair with a male at important tribal social functions to mark transitional and transformational changes, honor the dead and for healing purposes.
