This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of Democratic Republic of Congo.

This is a Chokwe mask. The Chokwe people can be found spread across Angola, Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo where they have a number of tribal settlements. This is a very refined Chokwe mask prepared to be exhibited.

The cruciform tattoo made of triangles carved on the forehead is known as cingelyengelye. The origin of the cross can be traced to the necklace crosses made from tin plates distributed among the Chokwe people in the 17th century by Capuchin monks from Portugal. These crosses were worn by the Chokwe as amulets and have become ingrained in the culture of the people.

This is a female mask is of the Mwana Pwo class. It is carved to represent a woman the carver considers of ideal beauty. The plaited hairdo is exactly like the one worn by Chokwe women. It is called tota and coated in red earth, representing one of the major means of female beautification. It superimposes the coiffure on the mask itself because the tota is an important aspect of the Chokwe female beauty grooming.

This mask also evokes the beauty of the maternal ancestor of the tribe, a Luanda Queen. It is, therefore, expected to inspire women to graceful conduct and refined manners.
