This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This mask is of the Chokwe people who are mostly found in Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. The Chokwe have a wide variety of masks some of which were used for tribal religious and administrative rites. However, some are considered entertainment masks and this is one of such.

This mask is in the class of Chokwe mask called the Chihongo, meaning the Spirit of Wealth. Chihongo masks have the definitive style found on this mask and these include overflowing beards, gaunt face and sunken cheeks. The mask is a representation of the typical tribal elder. In the old days, masks like this would be worn by a chief or his sons as they travel through their realm collecting tribute for the protection afforded by the mask.

Therefore, this Chihongo mask is believed to bring prosperity and is seen as a sign of elevation, lifelong achievement and wealth.

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are pre carved into the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.
