This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand made by the artists of Ivory Coast.
This is a Goli mask from the Baule tribe. The Baule tribe is a subgroup of the Akan people living in present-day Ghana and Ivory Coast.
The Baule people make different masks for the four types of dances they have. The dances are gba gba, bonu amuen, mblo and goli. Baule masks either represent individuals in the tribe or tribal ideals. They never portray ancestors. These masks are only worn by the men.
This mask is the classic Goli mask. Key differentiators of the Goli mask from the other Baule masks include the round, moon-shape of the mask itself as well as the two horns crowning it.
The Baule adopted the goli mask from the Wan tribe only in the last century and use it in celebratory dances. The goli celebration is usually an all-day affair. Four pairs of this mask will appear during the celebration, each leading a group of adolescent dancers.
This goli mask is worn during harvests, visits of very important people and at funerals of great people.

Hanging Instructions: Two holes are pre carved into the top portion of the back of the mask. String is tied through the holes for immediate hanging.
