This Gond tribal painting is one of a kind, hand painted by Dilip Shyam, the Gond artist of Madhya Pradesh, India.
This painting of an intricately pattern tiger and bird is from Gond. Gond artists especially paint textures by layering and can thus make paintings like this in which the figures are represented in high details. Most of such paintings are of nature especially animals with birds having a predominance. The Gond's fascination with birds arises from the migratory travels of birds which gives them the attribute, among the tribe, of serving as a link between the gods and the mortals.
In this painting, a bird on a tiger represents the special, symbiotic relationship between the two species. It is a depiction of a resting tiger and a comfortable bird which altogether makes a beautiful picture of a peaceful relationship between two unlikes.
