This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of West Africa.
This is a male Dan mask. This mask, like all Dan mask, is sacred and held to be the guardian spirit of the tribe. Its specific purpose is now no longer employed and today, this mask can be used in celebratory dances for important guests or in tribal celebrations. Such celebrations are handled by the go society and as such this mask would have been under their care.
Distinctive Dan craftsmanship to be seen on this mask include the protruding mouth and eyes, the high-domed forehead, the concave face and the rich, brown patina. Similarly, Dan sculptors are highly skilled and they provide one of the most expressive masks on the continent. With the inclusion of the teeth and the mask's expression, this is a mask of aggression and would have been used to inspire fear either in warriors from other tribes or in young boys undergoing the tribal initiation ceremonies.
