This is a Kuba mask. The Kuba people are found in present-day Democratic Republic of Congo. They produce detailed and varied artworks with masks as a prominent achievement.
The distinguishing features of this mask include the high forehead and broad nose, both typical elements of Kuba masks. In addition, Kuba sculptors are known for patterning detailed geometric designs on masks. The raffia bast surrounding the mask denotes the spirit of nature which serves as the link between the people and the supreme deity of the tribe.
This Kuba mask is used in the initiation of young boys into the adult male societies. It is meant to confer esoteric knowledge on these young men as they full enter adulthood.
