This is a Baule mask. The Baule people live in Ivory Coast. They are prolific farmers and artists. Masks such as this are meant to keep the Baule in contact with the supernatural. By its lustrous surface and elegance, this Buale mask is in the Mblo class. The surface is carved to denote the smooth, well-fed skin of a known individual.
For beautification, there are the scar dot marks and the coiffure made in simple, stylish parts. This Mblo mask depicts a known individual and is meant to embody the ideals of beauty. The comb on the head is a sign of personal grooming and refinement and serves an ornamental purpose. This Mblo mask is in a category of one of the oldest Baule art forms. Masks like this would have been used in performance dances during tribal celebrations.
