This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved by the artists of West Africa.
This is a Bembe mask. The Bembe is a small tribe found in the Congo. Although small, the Bembe are always in contact with their neighbors, Teke and Kongo tribes, and the influence of these neighbors can be seen in the tribe's art and culture.
Bembe art is deeply religious. Although most of the tribe's artwork consists of statuettes, masks are a more recent addition. The Bembe never depict their chief god but rather have ancestral masks and statuettes.
This mask is, therefore, a rare Bembe artwork, depicting an ancestor.
