This wood mask is a one of a kind mask, hand carved & hand painted by the artists of Indonesia.
This is a Bali mask from Indonesia. It is made to be hung on the wall as decoration and not worn in tribal ceremonial dances. It differs from the related dotted and stripped masks from the Lombok region by the distinctive symmetrical wavy pattern of both the upper and lower lips. It is carved on a single wood, preferably albesia, sanded endlessly then given a glossy finish with many coats of paint.
A great deal of time and attention to details are involved in the carving of this mask. Not only is the sanding and painting time-consuming, the wood has to be specially selected and prepared. The elongated form exemplified by this mask is a modern movement in Bali art aimed to appeal to tourists.
While this is not a Bali dance mask, it still incorporates most of the elements found on Bali traditional masks. This modern mask is made for the export market; although the motifs on it are varied and their meanings obscure, a Bali mask is not without its symbolism. For example, the flame shapes around the lips and eyes are reminiscent of the fiery elements of Garuda, a mythological bird-like beast and the national symbol often represented in masks. Garuda is a mythical creature shared by Hinduism and Buddhism and revered as a conqueror of evil and devourer of enemies. Other motifs especially the geometric forms are, however, less defined and may be offshoots of religious, mystical, tribal or family symbols.
