This wood statue is a one of a kind statue, hand carved by the artists of Indonesia.
This is a Leti male altar statue of the earliest kind available. What is left of the patina and the surface of the wood shows that this rare figure has seen actual use. In its distinctive style, this statue of the Leti Islands can be identified from its curly, omega-shaped ears, the oblong carved in relief to the square base upon which the figure is perched. It is also a signature Leti style to carve figures griping their shins as is seen with this statue.
This Leti statue was made in the likeness of an actual person. The people of the Leti Islands believe in the preservation of the memory of the dead in statues. It is believed that the spirit of the dead is also taken on by the statues. This statue would have been kept dear after it was made and also kept in the family of the person so depicted.
To show that the man carved here was also, the wavy lines of wrinkles are added on the forehead. The roughhewn appearance of this statue makes it dated and, therefore, distinguishes it from the later statues which have smoother lines. This makes it all the more prized as it represents an authentic piece at the head of the refinement of Leti art.
