This is Yoruba crown. The Yoruba people make a large multi-tribe group occupying a large area stretching from southwest Nigeria and extending to the neighboring Togo and Republic of Benin.
The Yoruba people have a creator god ruling over a rich pantheon of over 400 deities and spirits. They regard their kings as godlike.
This crown is the most important part of the royal regalia, and every aspect of it is a meaningful symbol.
The white color represents Obatala who is king over the other deities. He is regarded as pure, patient, merciful and all-powerful. The blue represents a river goddess suggesting that the realm to which this crown belongs lies besides a great river.
The repeated triangular pattern represents the sacred nature of the crown and the king. The interlocking connection of these triangles denote the chain of never-ending succession of kings all the way back to Oduduwa, the first Yoruba king.
The face on the crown is also a depiction of Oduduwa and the line of royal ancestors following him who watch over the reigning king and his descendants. The birds surrounding the crown represents the women in the royal household who are believed to have mystical powers and support the king during his reign. However, the bird atop the crown symbolizes protection for the potent esoteric medicines stored at the summit of the crown.
The braided veil running down the hem of the crown symbolizes a connection between the king and the gods, and it shields the face of the king preventing the subjecting from directly gazing at the divine power therein.
A Yourba crown like this one is highly prized and rarely found outside of the royal household. It represents the whole kingdom and without it a Yoruba tribe cannot crown new kings.
